Graphics For Netflix

We have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Netflix’s brand new supernatural thriller The Innocents, which follows the story of teenage lovers Harry (Percelle Ascott) and June (Sorcha Groundsell) who run away from their repressive families to live together, only to find themselves navigating a strange and dangerous new world. Despite the Innocents being a supernatural drama, Acme were tasked with making prop graphics that were relatable in today’s world. The juxtaposition between the everyday graphic items and the supernatural storyline makes the plot even more immersive and believable.

Among the long list of graphics props made for The Innocents were the animated sequences. A notable one shown in episode two is the online poker game, we created everything from characters to the interface and interactive animated elements.

Interactive Animated Graphics

It’s been a busy month here at Acme, amid the graphic prop requests we have been making animated computer sequences for film and TV.  Having specialised in creating bespoke animations for mobiles, tablets and computers for many years, we have found ourselves creating them for a diverse range of productions.

We worked on the BBC’s adaptation of Zadie Smith’s acclaimed novel NW. NW tells the heart-breaking story of Natalie and Leah’s friendship and the different directions their lives have taken. Acme were tasked with creating all of the computer and tablet animations used by the actors, including a Facebook inspired screen graphic.

This animation was created as an interactive animated sequence that required us to design everything from the logo and tools to the interface. Simulating such a well known program as Facebook is a balancing act between creating something that is instantly relatable and that does not infringe any copyright laws. A program such as Facebook would usually take a significant time to design, however working within this industry requires us to work within a tight time frame, within budget whilst creating a program that is both believable and accessible.

Amazing Drone photo montage for The Detectorists

A blend of 100 photos taken by a Drone in Suffolk were photoshopped together to create a seamless birds eye view landscape. It was a tricky job to remove the buildings, vehicles and unwanted details, so that the camera could start as a printed action prop held by a property developer and end as an overhead shot of Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones metal detecting in a field.

The sequence starts as a printed prop, it is unrolled to view the area that the Detectorists are standing in. The camera zooms in, each stage of that zoom had to be created and seamlessly patched together, as the camera shot get closer – the viewer recognises that it is the stars of the show. You would never know it started as 100 photos taken by a drone!

Acme Graphics Animation for League of Gentlemen

Acme Graphics specialise in creating animations for use on prop laptops, desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones. We have created many variations as per scripts from art departments from TV & Film.

This clip shows Les Mcqueen, played by Mark Gatiss from the fictitious band Creme Brulee in League of Gentlemen. He was Googling himself and Acme Graphics created the whole sequence as an animation so that the Actor has both control over the movements or they can be programmed in taking the stress away from the actor and the prop man controls the action for the director off camera.

Acme Graphics design Animations for Film and TV

Acme Graphics has been credited in the award winning film Northern Disco Lights for its animation throughout the film. The story of house music is told from the perspective of the DJ’s and Producers both from Norway and internationally acclaimed music professionals. The film is a selection of vintage clips and animations to illustrate the memories of the people involved in the music movement that is now internationally respected.

This video is compliments the narration by the DJ’s from Norway talking about when popular music came to Norway that had been up until that time about 25 years behind in music taste, with no radio stations or DJ Events. This animated sequence designed by Acme tells the story perfectly and gives the viewer a funny picture of the average life of a young Norwegian in the early 1990s.
